The Peace Pillow manifested in early spring, harkening fresh ideas from past inspirations. The latest Folk Art Pillow is reminiscent of childhood times living in Europe & Canada during the 1960s.
This spring, I ordered a variety of wool to inspire the creation of new pillows. I really like the Pattons Classic Bulky yarn, which features a handknit look, for the Peace Pillow. A free ball of funky sock yarn was added to the last wool order and became the initial inspiration for designing a pillow reminiscent of the 1960s.
I created the fabric for the Peace Pillow by wet felting using roving wool. This process involves agitating the wool fibers with water and soap to create a sturdy piece of cloth. I used various shades of green to give a faded and tie-dye appearance, serving as a backdrop to the embroidered peace sign.
* chain stitches in various colors for the peace sign symbol and blanket stitch for the edge
*Crochet a border in the funky color sock yarn. Tiny continental stitches give a pop of color and are also used to secure the peace sign to the pillow cover.
* Crochet the ends of the bolster and chain-stitch a spiraling circle with the colorful sock yarn to bring the eye to the cute, colorful pom-poms at the end.
I grew up with the peace symbol, a powerful emblem of the 1960s counterculture movement. I found online where it had originated and for what it was designed. To learn more about the peace symbol that was created in 1958, I delved into its history and significance, which profoundly influenced the design of the Peace Pillow.
The Peace Pillow is not just a bolster pillow; it's a unique piece of art that will add a touch of funky & groovy style to any room. Its design elements, from the embroidered peace sign to the colorful pom-poms, are sure to intrigue and inspire.
PEACE, Minaz Jantz
