DIY Folk Painted Pots

DIY Folk Pots made from repurposed coffee tins.

DIY handpainted FOLK POTS are transformed from repurposed coffee tins into decorative pots that enlighten a garden or home as a container to hold STUFF with a lid or for the perfect size plant pot for indoors and outdoors.

It all started with the perfect size coffee tins, empty of their caffeine, waiting for an idea to repurpose.

I have some old household blue oil paint to use and thought why not paint the tins for outside flower pots.

Painting the pots was taken to the next stage, utilizing the leftover artist's oil paint on the palette to give the tins a decorative touch over top of the blue household oil paint. I just hate disposing oil paint on the painters' palette and so became the yearly ritual of preparing and painting about 12 coffee tins for spring.

Painting each series of Folk Pots I keep to one rule, making each pot unique with various paintbrush marks building on top of each layer. Because it is oil paint it must be left to dry between stages of new strokes with new colors over top of the last and so forth until I feel completely done!

The time span & stages to make a series of 12 pots in oil paint takes about 2 weeks to complete. I like using oil paint which makes the pots much more durable for outside and inside wear and tear.

Using the Folk Pot to grow plants, the pots will last about 3 years with the inside rusting out. No worries there are more coffee tins to be had for the next year!

  • The first is to clean out the pots and remove the glue from the labels.
  • Use acrylic gesso to cover the tin first, makes it easier to apply the oil paint and let it adhere to the surface.
  • 2 coats of household oil paint (Blue).
  • Decorative paint strokes can take a week.
  • To use as a plant pot, take the lid of the coffee tin and put it on the bottom. Get a hammer and large nail to punch holes for drainage into the bottom through the lid and into the tin. The lid on the bottom of the tin helps rust stains on plant plates and decks to a minimum.

I have too much fun making the pots and even more fun giving them their names...
