The latest Folk Art Pillow, 'Bee Nice Grow Flowers, ' is a hand-stitched message to save the bees from extinction. Handwork, such as needle felting, embroidery, crochet, and knitting, creates an entirely unique pillow that comes with its own removable cover. I will one day be able to glance at the wildflowers growing around us and the felted bees.
The first step is to express a story to spark an idea. The planet depends on bees to pollinate, and without them, we would have a planet without food. I have been receiving free bee seeds from the Bees Matter organization, which sends a packet of wildflowers & grasses to attract bees. Each year, I plant them and love watching the seeds grow into happy meals for bees.
Last year, I purchased a book, 'Botany in a Day' by Thomas J. Elpel. I have moments here and there to read through and will one day be able to glance at the wildflowers growing around us to know their healing properties and their families by heart.
The crafting process was a joyous one, especially when it came to making the fat, felted bees. I wanted their legs to be abundant with pollen, so I stitched light blue thread through the wings and added a few hidden stitches to secure them to the body. Safety pins were hand-stitched to the back of each bee, allowing for movement and adding a playful touch to the design.
Crochet is fun and quick to shape into various designs. The crochet flowers feature felted balls stitched into the center to add a visual pop. I ran my favorite BLANKET stitch around the crochet leaves to give them some SPICE.
The corners of the pillow needed something to round off the busy center. I found a beautiful rose-colored wool and crocheted a large rose for each corner. Attaching the rose to the corner of the pillow was a meticulous process. I ran the thread to the backside of the pillow corner, securing it tightly with a button to ensure the rose stayed in place.
